1. Assess Your Schedule
This one is easy. Just figure out how busy you are versus how busy you actually want to be. If it turns out you’re working more hours than you’re spending doing what heals your mind, then it’s clear you’re probably working too much.
Sometimes it can’t be helped, but it’s just as important to do what makes you happy as it is to do what you have to do.
2. Evaluate Schedule and Priority Conflicts
You might be forced to put your passions on hold in favor of work. That can’t always be helped. The problem is that if you’re always putting your passions on hold, it means you’re never getting the chance to do them.
We’ve all been there. If you can’t scale anything back, try to reorganize your daily expectations and activities to fit your favorite hobbies in a little more easily.
3. ‘Me’ Time
It’s especially important for you to make sure you’ve dedicated a good enough amount of time strictly for yourself. This applies to everyone from college students to moms. Even the most dedicated workers in any field need a break for themselves now and again.
Lazing around in bed, watching your favorite movie, taking a tour at the museum, whatever. Getting away from the stresses of life and focusing on you for a little while is essential to a happy existence.
4. Meditate
Your body and mind are in sync and it’s important to keep them both healthy and working properly. If you’re currently not able to work in a few hours of time, try to work in a few minutes, at least.
Learn to take just ten minutes every so often and just disconnect from the world, retreat into the stillness of your own mind, away from work and technology and responsibility and stress and just…breathe.
5. Introspective Reflection
Take a little time each day to confront yourself with the basic truths of your being. Stop and take notice of all your flaws, all your good points, your bad points and the points in between. Set aside a little time to polish yourself — examine yourself carefully and learn to accept who you truly are.
6. Get Rid of Clutter
Brace yourself and tackle that mess you’ve been meaning to take care of for months now. So get in there and sort like your life depends on it. Because your happiness very well might.
The general rule of thumb regarding clutter is to get rid of anything you haven’t used or worn in roughly six months to a year.
Place everything in Keep, or Discard piles. By decluttering your life, you might find yourself feeling lighter, maybe slightly happier.
7. Drink Water Every Day
More specifically, work to stick to the rule of thumb that states you’re supposed to have eight glasses of water a day. Maybe your busy schedule won’t let you exercise as much as you’d like, but there’s no reason not to stay hydrated frequently.
You can carry a tumbler of water wherever you go and there are even apps out there to help remind you of how much water you’ve consumed and how much you have left to go through to reach the recommended amount.
8. Watch Your Emotions
No matter what stresses you might be going through at work, take care not to let it get to you too deeply. And if we let these emotions cycle out of control, it can have nasty impacts on our whole days. Some people who fall prey to emotional turmoil wind up drinking.
This is especially dangerous for people with various afflictions, such as depression or anxiety. Falling into the alcohol trap while suffering from an illness, be it physical or mental, can be extremely detrimental.
9. Responsibility Limit
It’s in the nature of high achievers to try to take on as much work as they can, to push themselves as far and as hard as they can go for the best results. But this is ultimately a bad idea, as it can easily overwork us and cause burn-out.
If you want true happiness, you need to learn when enough is enough for you and to handle what you’ve taken before going back for more. Prioritize what you can’t avoid before focusing on the tasks that you can.
10. You’re Only Human
If you’re trying to push yourself, be it at work or even at a weight loss goal, remember to set realistic expectations. You can’t tell yourself that, say, you want to lose fifty pounds of weight in two weeks. Sure, it’s doable, but it’s not at all healthy.
If you must set goals for yourself, think about the most straight-forward and realistic ways in which you can accomplish it and follow it at your own pace. Focus on what you can do and just go from there.
11. Sleep
You’d be surprised how many busy people put off getting enough sleep in order to push in a few extra hours of work at night. We need sleep. We literally can’t survive without it.
Instead of staying up super late and getting up super late, try to go to bed at relatively the same time every night. Getting onto a proper schedule will help you to sleep better, which will ultimately boost your mood because you’re getting regular sleep.
We know it’s hard to be perfectly happy in this chaotic existence. There are going to be days when you fail — when you feel stressed and depressed, but you can’t let them affect you forever. Tomorrow is another day, after all. Focus on the here and now and do what makes you happy with the time you have available to you.
